Common Questions
“My child is falling behind in school…”
Very often the first time you find out about your child’s needs is from their teacher or school. You may get reports that your child is having difficulty. This can come as quite a shock, but it doesn’t mean these difficulties can’t be overcome.
There are several possible problems that your child might have that a Speech-Language Pathologist can help with including Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD or ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), articulation disorders, receptive language disorders and expressive language disorders.
The way to approach each of these is different, and the role a Speech Therapist plays in helping your child is different. Some require a complete team of professionals and some just require a Speech Therapist.
In all cases, though, connecting with your child’s school is a very important aspect so that we can make sure that we provide them with information on how they can best help your child succeed and they can provide us with information about the curriculum and how we can support it.
Unlike with Early Intervention, my approach with older children is primarily mixed. I spend most of my time directly working with your child and we have periodic meetings where we discuss how things are going, new and ongoing concerns, and what we can do to provide your child with the best chance of success.
“What should I do?”
ADD and ADHD
Attention Deficit Disorder should be addressed by a team of professionals. A diagnosis must be made by a physician who will make recommendations concerning medication or other interventions. Often, skills such as attention, memory, organization, time management and creative thinking are impacted and need to be created and developed in the child. We will work together to find activities that your child enjoys and embed our therapy into them. Your child is already frustrated enough, let’s work to make therapy a positive experience!
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
No matter if your child was diagnosed early or later in their development, the social pressures of school can make ASD more apparent. Even if the symptoms are more mild, ASD takes a team effort to give your child the best chance of success. Talk to me about connecting with other professionals to create a team, or I will happily integrate into the team you are building.
Articulation Disorders - Phonological Disorders
Articulation and phonological disorders are disorders of speech sounds. Often a child has problems making sounds correctly due to not making the correct shapes with their mouth. If your child has difficulty pronouncing speech sounds correctly we will work together to help your child identify and then change the way they create the problem sounds, and then use the correct sound in their everyday life.
Receptive and Expressive Language Disorders
Children with a receptive language disorder struggle to process speech. They may ‘act up’ in school due to misunderstanding or just through frustration at not ‘getting it’. Children with a developmental expressive language disorder experience difficulty expressing themselves. Vocabulary or grammar may be impacted. Our job is to work with the school to provide the child both with compensatory strategies so they can be successful right now, as well as to address the skill deficits your child is showing.
